Tin-Yum Lau
Tin-Yum Lau was born in Hong Kong in 1941. His father, a painter
and calligrapher, taught him the art of Chinese calligraphy. He
entered the Hong Kong Institute of Fine Arts to study western art in
1958.
In 1965, he went to France to enrol in the École Nationale
Supérieure des Beaux-arts de Paris and worked in the studio of the
painter Brianchon. During his years in France from 1965 to 1969, he
traveled widely visiting several European countries. His first solo
exhibition was held at the Galerie A.C.T.U.A. in Paris in 1969.
Upon his return to Hong Kong at the end of 1969, he presented the
same paintings at the City Hall Exhibition Hall. Shortly after, he
immigrated to Canada. In Montreal, he joined the graphic studio
directed by Richard Lacroix in 1970. He received an invitation from
the Canada-Scandinavia Foundation to visit Sweden as an artist in
residence in 1974. He is a founding member of the Atelier Circulaire
of Montreal. In 1982, he organized a cultural exchange tour of China
for 18 Quebec artists.
From 1975 to 1996, he received several grants from the Canada
Council and the ministère de la culture du Québec for research
projects and exhibitions both in and outside of Canada.
Since 1980, Lau Tin-Yum has pursued a career as a professional
artist as well as teaching art for the École des Arts visuels et
médiatiques at the Université du Québec à Montréal where he
completed his MA in 1999. He has had numerous exhibitions of his
paintings, graphics, photos, calligraphy and installations both in
Canada and abroad. He is director of la galerie ESPACE in Montreal,
a centre for the exhibition and diffusion of works by established
and rising artists.
